Bunco anyone?
I learned to play Bunco last weekend - my fifth new thing this year. It was Becky LeBar's 40th birthday party, a girls' night out. Bunco is definitely a fast-paced game, and if played with a group of women, makes for some disjointed conversations!

Pinewood Racing!
This first year of Cub Scouts has been a bit of a challenge. When Jason and I are juggling and struggling to meet the requirements we wonder if it's worth it. And then comes something like the Pinewood Derby. Jeremy had a great time working on his car with Jason. He had very specific ideas about how his car should look. It didn't matter that his car was too light and they had to glue weight on it. He just enjoyed crouching by the track and watching his car race. "Mom, I got 4th!" he beamed to me. He didn't care that there were only 4 cars racing. He just had fun being part of the action. I love that about him!
I'm realizing that many of my new things this year will be courtesy of my children. I'm just fine with that.

Visiting
This weekend I took my first ever road trip with my dad - my 3rd new thing for the year. We went to Richmond to see Papaw. I'm amazed at how well Papw still gets around at 93 1/2! I can tell he has slowed down, but his ability to live independently is incredible. Of course we went for Pizza King :) After that while we visited, Dad asked questions and I typed Papaw's responses. I don't know if I'll get to see him again, but I sure hope so!

He shoots! He scores!
We signed up Jeremy to play in the co-ed basketball league that plays at school. He's been entertaining to watch so far. Game focus is not exactly a strength, and he's often more intersted in entertaining himself by seeing if he can kick himself in the butt with his heels while he runs (he can) or something else of the like. It doesn't help that he's rather timid on the court. My boy is a lover, not a fighter! Today he got into the game and scored a basket. So, my second new thing is getting to be a parent in the stands and see my child score his first points in an organized game!

Friday in
Jason went to a scary movie so I'm spending the evening in with the kiddos. We're watching Wipe Out, which totally amuses Jeremy. I'm not sure how I feel about him describing one of the constestants as "hot" though!
I've been considering what types of new things I should count on my quest of 40 before 40. I want to do things that stretch me. Can I come up with enough things? is the question. I need to average one new thing every week and a half!

How to Challenge Myself?
I turn 40 at the end of 2012 and decided to borrow the idea of trying 40 new things this year before I turn 40. This blog is my first new thing! I've never been much of a journaler, but this morning in church Pastor Steve challenged that journaling is one of 6 ways to abide with Christ. I haven't yet decided exactly how I will use this blog...whether to remember my 40 new things, to focus my time as I abide with Christ, or maybe a little of both. Either way, here goes my first new thing for the year!
